Description
Gentle Vibes is a standalone vibraphone instrument plugin from Somerville Sounds, rebuilt from Jon Meyer's earlier Kontakt prototype into a dedicated AU, VST3, and AAX release for macOS and Windows. It focuses on soft vintage-mallet tone rather than orchestral-scale detail, making it quick to drop into intimate cues, lo-fi sketches, and mellow melodic parts.
The instrument is built around three mallet colors: fleece for a deeper thud, rubber for a clearer ringing attack, and yarn as the middle ground. Individual volume controls let you blend those sources before reaching for the rest of the shaping panel.
For movement and atmosphere, Gentle Vibes adds high-pass and low-pass filters, pedal sustain, modest room reverb, and wow/flutter controls for subtle aged pitch movement. The sustain switch can keep notes short and naturally fading, or push the response closer to piano-style resonance.
Use it when a track needs vibraphone warmth without a heavy sampler workflow or a huge percussion library. The current Somerville store product remains priced at $0 with a suggested $5 donation, but access runs through the official checkout and mailing-list flow, so SSA should link users to the developer page instead of mirroring an unverified installer.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does Gentle Vibes require Kontakt?
No. Somerville Sounds describes Gentle Vibes as a dedicated standalone plug-in, and the official FAQ says the Prototypes work on Mac and PC in major DAWs without Kontakt.
What mallet sounds are included?
BPB reports that Jon Meyer sampled the vibraphone with fleece, yarn, and rubber mallets. The fleece source is deeper and thuddier, the rubber source is clearer and more ringing, and the yarn source sits between them.
How much tone shaping does it provide?
Gentle Vibes keeps the interface simple but still gives useful control over mallet blend, high-pass and low-pass filtering, sustain behavior, reverb, wow, and flutter. That makes it more flexible than a static vibraphone patch without turning it into a complex scoring library.
How is the download accessed?
The official store product is priced at $0 with a suggested $5 amount, but the product page says downloading adds the user to the Somerville Sounds mailing list. SSA should therefore link externally instead of mirroring an unverified checkout installer.
