Tube Saturator Vintage
Key Features
- Models two common-cathode 12AX7 preamp stages with 64-bit circuit simulation for detailed tube-style saturation.
- Drive control raises input gain while compensating output level, making it easier to set distortion by ear.
- Baxandall three-band EQ provides bass, mid, and treble shaping before the tube preamp stage.
- EQ bypass lets the saturation stage be used on its own when no tonal adjustment is needed.
- FAT mode changes the first preamp stage’s bias for more gain, punch, and saturation.
- Analog-style metering, no latency, mono or stereo operation, and support for sample rates up to 192 kHz.
Description
Tube Saturator Vintage is Wave Arts’ reissue of its original dual-12AX7 tube-preamp simulation, combining controllable drive with a three-band Baxandall EQ. It is designed for adding a little analog-style weight and tone shaping to a source, or for pushing harder into tube-style distortion.
The Drive control raises input gain while lowering output gain, so it is straightforward to audition different amounts of saturation without losing level perspective. A FAT switch changes the first preamp stage’s bias for additional gain and saturation, while the EQ can be bypassed when you only want the preamp stage.
The plug-in runs in mono or stereo, has analog-style metering, and supports sampling rates up to 192 kHz when the host computer has sufficient processing power. Its detailed circuit simulation is intentionally CPU-intensive, so it suits a few important channels or buses more naturally than blanket use across a large session.
Use it for tube character on drums, bass, vocals, guitars, synths, or a mix bus, then match the output before deciding how much drive to keep. The three-band EQ is particularly useful when you want to shape the added color in the same plug-in rather than reach for a separate equalizer.

Frequently Asked Questions
How does Tube Saturator Vintage differ from a basic distortion plug-in?
It models a two-stage 12AX7 preamp and places a three-band Baxandall EQ before that circuit. This makes it useful for gentle tonal coloration as well as more noticeable drive, with EQ and FAT switches available alongside the Drive control.
What does FAT mode do in Tube Saturator Vintage?
FAT changes the bias circuit of the first preamp stage. According to Wave Arts, that increases gain and saturation, making it a useful option when a source needs more punch or thickness.
Why can Tube Saturator Vintage use significant CPU?
Wave Arts says the plug-in uses detailed circuit simulation technology and recommends a fast computer. For dense sessions, try it first on key tracks or buses and compare the result after matching the output level.
How is Tube Saturator Vintage activated?
The official product page says the plug-in asks for registration the first time it opens. Select Register, enter a name and email address, and Wave Arts sends a serial; this happens after you have downloaded and installed the public installer.
