Key Features

  • FFT-based processing supports detailed spectral dynamics and corrective frequency work.
  • EQ mode can act as a linear-phase mastering EQ or a precise surgical equalizer.
  • Compressor mode applies a fixed ratio with an independently adjustable threshold for each frequency band.
  • Gate mode uses per-band thresholds to control frequency-specific spill or low-level content.
  • Subtract mode builds a noise profile and removes that profile from the incoming signal.
  • Input and output response displays show spectral changes while working.
  • Curves can be built from any number of points or drawn freehand with the mouse.

Description

ReaFIR is Cockos' FFT-based processor for spectral cleanup, dynamics work, and corrective equalization inside a VST host. Its four operating modes cover linear-phase or surgical EQ, per-band compression, per-band gating, and noise-profile subtraction, so one instance can address steady background noise as well as difficult frequency-specific problems.

The response display shows the input and output spectrum, and its curve can be drawn with as many points as needed or shaped freehand. That makes it more hands-on than a one-knob denoiser when a track needs targeted spectral decisions rather than a broad automatic pass.

For noise reduction, Subtract mode learns a noise profile and removes that profile from the signal; it is especially suited to steady sources such as hum, hiss, or air-conditioning noise. Compressor and Gate modes instead apply a threshold independently across frequency bands, making ReaFIR useful for controlling harsh or uneven material without relying on one full-range detector.

ReaFIR is delivered in Cockos' ReaPlugs suite, a permanently available Windows VST package with separate 32-bit and 64-bit installers and WINE support listed by the developer. It is an older VST-only external package, so this standalone route should not be mistaken for a current native macOS release.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are ReaFIR's four processing modes?

ReaFIR provides EQ, Compressor, Gate, and Subtract modes. The first three handle frequency-shaped correction or dynamics, while Subtract mode is designed to remove a captured noise profile.

How does ReaFIR remove background noise?

In Subtract mode, it can build a profile of unwanted noise and subtract that profile from the signal. This approach is most useful for steady noise such as hum, hiss, or air-conditioning, so audition the result carefully before applying heavy reduction.

Can ReaFIR work as a dynamic EQ?

Its Compressor and Gate modes use thresholds per frequency band, which lets processing react differently across the spectrum. That makes it useful for taming isolated harshness or frequency-dependent spill rather than applying one broadband threshold.

Can ReaFIR be installed outside REAPER?

Yes. Cockos distributes it in the ReaPlugs VST FX Suite for use in another compatible host. The standalone page lists 32-bit and 64-bit Windows VST installers and WINE support, rather than a native macOS package.
