Description

CX5M-V is a four-operator FM synthesizer by Digital Systemic Emulations inspired by Yamaha’s CX5M and CX5M-II music computers. It offers eight algorithms and operator feedback for exploring the sound of those early digital instruments inside a Windows plugin.

The design deliberately includes some rough edges associated with the original hardware. Low-frequency aliasing and stepped envelopes on long attacks or releases give patches a distinctly vintage digital character.

Its envelope design uses ADSR with an added delay stage, while a low-pass gated filter replaces a control found on the original. The LFO is also simplified, giving sound designers another way to introduce movement to patches.

The developer notes that the feedback implementation is an approximation and can differ audibly from the hardware at higher settings. The free edition provides eight voices; a separate 31-voice edition is offered in exchange for a donation.

CX5M-V is available as 64-bit VST2 and VST3 for Windows. The developer lists a patch recall issue in FL Studio 20.1.2, and users have also reported recall problems in other hosts, so check your own sessions before relying on it for a project.
