Description

Altitude by nakst is a hybrid synthesis workstation for building layered electronic instruments from subtractive oscillators, sample layers, FM routing, filters, effects, and sequencing. It is broader than a simple virtual analog synth, with four oscillators and four sample layers that can be mapped, layered, detuned, and pushed into complex motion.

The sound engine is built for dense patches without turning the interface into a modular puzzle. Dual filters, 17 effect types, eight effect slots, two 24-step sequencers, arpeggiators, macro controls, and a 21-slot modulation matrix give it enough depth for evolving pads, animated basses, cinematic effects, and polyrhythmic sequences.

Its biggest limitation is format support. Altitude does not ship as VST3, so it is best suited to CLAP hosts such as Bitwig or REAPER, macOS Audio Unit setups, FL Studio users who can use the native format, or standalone performance and sound-design sessions.

The current itch.io page lists Windows, macOS, and Linux downloads with no price, no DRM, and no account gate. Independent coverage also confirms the former paid workstation has moved into nakst's no-cost lineup rather than appearing as a short promotion.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Altitude support VST3?

No. The current download page lists CLAP, Audio Unit on macOS, FL Studio native on Windows, and standalone builds, but not VST3.

What makes Altitude different from nakst's smaller Apricot synth?

Altitude expands the hybrid idea into a larger workstation-style instrument. It has four virtual analog oscillators, four sample layers, deeper modulation, more effects, two sequencers, and a much larger factory ROM.

Can Altitude import or use samples?

Yes. The engine includes four sample layers and a factory ROM with 265 MB of sample data, and the official materials describe sample layering as a core part of the instrument.

Is Altitude copy-protected?

No. The itch.io listing states that Altitude has no copy protection or DRM, and the developer page describes offline use without license keys.
