Slower Fragment
Key Features
- Real half-speed tape recordings from four hardware chains give you organically pitched-down keys, strings, winds, and synth tones instead of synthetic wow-and-flutter pasted onto clean samples
- Four tape characters let you move from cleaner studio reel warmth to portable wobble, cassette grit, and dictaphone lo-fi damage without leaving the same instrument concept
- Six curated presets from the full Slower library cover Pure Taped Grand, Lush Strings, Alpine Sphere, Animated Flute, LoFi Saw, and Alto Flute for quick writing and layering
- Three macro controls steer multiple hidden parameters at once, making it easy to push saturation, delay, space, brightness, wobble, and reverse-style motion from a simple front panel
- The pitched-down sampling approach naturally emphasizes low-end body, softened transients, tape noise, and nostalgic instability that suit cinematic beds, ambient pads, and moody leads
- Kontakt Player and NKS 2 compatibility keep the library easy to integrate into a modern Native Access workflow even though the tone is built around vintage tape behavior
Description
Slower Fragment is a Kontakt Player instrument from e-instruments that distills the half-speed tape concept of Slower into six immediately playable patches for macOS and Windows. Instead of simulating tape with an effect chain, it plays back real recordings made on four analogue machines and slowed down an octave, which gives the library its thick low end, softened attack, and unstable nostalgic movement.
The official page frames those tape choices as Studio, Portable, Cassette, and Dictaphone, spanning relatively clean reel-to-reel warmth through wow-and-flutter wobble and microcassette grit. BPB's overview makes the same point from a user angle: the instrument behaves less like a tape emulation and more like a compact digital mellotron for cinematic beds, wobbly pads, muted leads, and mellow melodic textures.
The compact scope is part of the appeal. You get six curated presets from the full Slower library, plus three macro controls that can push saturation, delay, space, brightness, wobble, and reverse-style motion without dropping you into a deep programming workflow.
As checked on April 23, 2026, the official e-instruments product page still lists Slower Fragment at US$0 with no expiry language and explicitly says no credit card is required. Claiming it is still account-based though, because checkout sends a FastSpring serial that you redeem in Native Access before the library appears in Kontakt Player.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Slower Fragment need the full version of Kontakt?
No. e-instruments says it works in the free Kontakt 7 Player or Kontakt 7 version 7.10.2 or higher. The same page also lists NKS and NKS 2 compatibility, so it is meant to fit the normal Native Access and Kontakt Player workflow.
Is this a tape effect or a sampled instrument?
It is a sampled instrument, not just a tape-processing plugin. The sounds were recorded through four real tape machine types and then played back at half speed, so the wobble, grit, and softened tone come from the source material itself.
What sounds are actually included in the free version?
The free release keeps things compact with six presets taken from the full Slower library: Pure Taped Grand, Lush Strings, Alpine Sphere, Animated Flute, LoFi Saw, and Alto Flute. That gives you a mix of keys, strings, winds, and synth-flavored textures rather than a huge category-spanning library.
How do you claim and install it?
The official page says you add Slower Fragment to your cart, complete the free checkout, and create or sign into an e-instruments account. You then receive a FastSpring email with a serial number, which you redeem inside Native Access before downloading the library.
Is Slower Fragment still permanently free?
As of April 23, 2026, the official product page still labels it Fragment FREE, shows a US$0 price, and states that no credit card is required. There is no launch-window or expiry language on the current page, so it qualifies as a live freeware release rather than a short promo.
